Not to be missed...
I imagine most people do this anyway, but you've got to hike between at least two of the towns (if not all five). The views are fantastic, plus it's just a nice counterpoint to the usual museum or shop browsing!

April 6
Wow! Our first sight when coming out of the Monterosso train station was gorgeous with the late afternoon sun shining on the water! Then through the tunnel into "old town" and a hike up to our hotel. Dinner on our own was a highlight (see below) and lasted far into the night with several bottles of wine and complimentary sciacchetra (local dessert wine).

April 7
All day free! Hiked from Monterosso to Vernazza which is supposedly the hardest leg of the complete five-town trail. It was a "huff" (as Jamie called it) but definitely do-able and it got progressively easier from Vernazza on to the other towns. Another sunny day - how did we get so lucky in April? Caught the boat at the last town (Riomaggiore) all the way back up to Monterosso. Group dinner featured a pesto making demonstration and then a white sauce lasagna that was divine!

You've got to try...
Can't remember the Italian name for this, but we just called it "Seafood in a Jar." It's carried to your table in the terra cotta cooking jar and dumped out with much fanfare while the whole restaurant looks on!
